A global study shows that only about 30% of women are in tech, reinforcing the reality that the industry is still male-dominated. However, with the rise of digital transformation and the increasing demand for skilled professionals, more women are finding their way into tech, breaking barriers, and making remarkable contributions.

As a woman in Bayelsa, you may wonder how to get started in tech, what skills to learn, and how to navigate the challenges. When I started, I was a complete novice. I didn’t know which niche to focus on, and I dabbled in different tech skills, trying to find the right fit. It was confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming. I don’t want other women to experience the same struggles I did. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to help you break into tech with clarity and direction.

  1. Identify Your Tech Niche

Tech is broad, and finding your place in it is crucial. Here are some beginner-friendly fields you can explore:
• Digital Marketing (Social Media Management, SEO, Email Marketing, Google Ads, etc.)
• Graphic Design and UI/UX Design
• Web Development (Frontend, Backend, or Full-Stack Development)
• Cybersecurity
• Data Analysis and Data Science
• Product Management
• Cloud Computing and DevOps
• Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The key is to research these fields, understand what they entail, and choose one that aligns with your interests and strengths.

  1. Take Advantage of Free and Paid Tech Training

One of the best ways to break into tech is by learning from structured courses. Thankfully, there are free and affordable training opportunities available:
• Olotu Square Cybersecurity Training Program (based in Bayelsa)
• Tech Explore (For secondary school students in Bayelsa)
• Google Digital Skills for Africa (Free online courses)
• Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning (Affordable and sometimes free)
• She Code Africa and Women Techmakers (Programs specifically for women in tech)

  1. Join Tech Communities

Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals will keep you motivated and connected to opportunities. Some active tech communities you can join include:
• Women in Tech Nigeria
• She Code Africa
• Google Developer Groups (GDG) Yenagoa
• Facebook Developer Circles
• Build Bayelsa (a tech and creative platform for Bayelsa talents)

These communities provide mentorship, networking, and access to job opportunities.

  1. Work on Real-World Projects

Practical experience is key. After learning a skill, work on projects, contribute to open-source platforms, and take up internships (even if they are unpaid at first). This will help you build a portfolio and gain hands-on experience.

  1. Apply for Internships and Jobs

Once you’ve built your skills and portfolio, start applying for internships and entry-level jobs. Leverage platforms like:
• LinkedIn (Optimize your profile and apply for jobs)
• Upwork & Fiverr (Freelancing platforms to earn while gaining experience)
• Jobberman & Indeed Nigeria (For local job opportunities)

  1. Stay Consistent and Keep Learning

Tech is constantly evolving, and continuous learning is essential. Stay updated by following industry trends, taking advanced courses, and networking with professionals in your field.

Breaking into tech as a woman in Bayelsa may seem challenging, but it is possible with the right mindset, resources, and support. Start small, stay focused, and don’t be afraid to seek mentorship. The tech industry needs more women, and you have what it takes to thrive!

Would you like me to include specific success stories of women in Bayelsa who have made it in tech?
