Recognizing unemployment as a pressing challenge among young people in Nigeria, the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, has launched the “Skill the Youth, Kill Poverty Initiative 1.0.” This initiative aims to empower the youth by providing them with sustainable skills in solar energy installation and maintenance.
Tackling Unemployment Through Skill Development
Unemployment remains a major issue affecting young people, particularly in Bayelsa Central Senatorial District. While government jobs are limited due to resource constraints and population growth, it has become imperative to equip young individuals with income-generating skills to foster self-reliance, reduce crime, and alleviate poverty.
In alignment with the Youth Development and Diversification of Education towards Innovation and Technology Vision under the A.S.S.U.R.E.D Prosperity Agenda of His Excellency, Sen. Douye Diri, Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, this initiative is designed to train young people to become job creators rather than job seekers.
Why Solar Energy?
Following extensive research, the project team identified solar power energy technology as a high-demand skill in Bayelsa State. Many homes and businesses are transitioning to renewable energy sources, yet there is a scarcity of trained solar energy technicians. This training program aims to bridge that gap by producing competent professionals who can meet the growing demand for solar energy solutions.
